Separating Mixtures

Updated: Oct 22, 2019

Oct. 21-22, 2019

Objective: Use methods of separating mixtures.

Entrance Task: submit your Lucid Charts using Google Classroom.

Separation of Mixtures LAB

Your goal is to design and carry out a procedure for separating the components of a mixture. You will display your procedures and results on a poster. As you complete each of the steps of separation you will package each component in a plastic bag and attach it to the poster.

Mixture includes: Iron fillings (Fe), Salt (NaCl), Sand(SiO2), and BBs (PS)

Using any of the materials available to you on your lab table or on the side counters, separate out the mixture and recover all four components, each in as pure and dry a state as possible. One rule: you cannot touch the mixture with your hands!

Part 1: Procedure

  • List the steps you intend to take to separate the mixture below. Procedures must:

  • Use the correct names of the lab equipment

  • List instructions as numbered steps, in the correct order

  • Provide details of how to complete each step so that someone who wasn’t in the class could follow it

Part 2: Poster

  • Diagram (picture) of each step in the separation process with arrows connecting the steps. Think of the concept map like we did last week.

  • Caption for each diagram describing the process.

  • Hypotheses.

  • Table with Masses and % yield and % error.

  • Bag of separated component attached to the poster.
